What are “foundation skills”?

At NWA School for Dogs, we consider foundation skills to be those skills required for you and your dog to have a harmonious and happy life together.

Simple skills like:

  • what’s your name?
  • leave it
  • sit
  • down
  • come
  • walking politely on a leash
  • wait
  • being able to relax on their mat at home or in public
  • understanding that learning is fun

Although these are not all of our foundation skills, you can find them on our monthly training calendar.  Each day we ask our dogs to do each, if not more, of these skills without thinking of them as a learned behavior.

I’m sure many of you remember your childhood dog as being your constant companion and the perfectly well behaved dog.  The struggle, however, is that now that you’ve gotten a dog of your own you can’t figure out why your dog isn’t as wonderful as your faithful childhood companion.

It is my passion to help each and every dog live a fulfilling life rich with playtime, adventures outside, peace at home and understanding of the skills needed to live with their owners.

Let me help you connect with your special pup with easy and fun techniques.  I offer group classes, private coaching and day-school for dogs and each option includes personalized training to resolve your individual training hurdles!

Stop by sometime and say hello!   Visitors are always welcome but I recommend you call ahead to make sure I’m not out training a dog to be the perfect pup.
