One of my favorite techniques for working with reactive dogs is the simple yet effective “Engage-Disengage” method. It’s a game-changer for helping dogs learn to manage their reactions to triggers in a positive, stress-free way.
Before diving into Engage-Disengage, I recommend starting with classical conditioning when your dog is around the stimuli that cause unwanted reactions. Pairing the trigger with something positive (like treats) helps shift their emotional response. Additionally, a solid foundation in clicker training is essential so your dog understands what the click means and associates it with rewards.
Once you’ve done your clicker homework, practiced classical conditioning, and worked on Mat Work at home to help your overly aroused dog learn what calm feels like, you’re ready to start Engage-Disengage. This technique involves rewarding your dog for noticing their trigger (engaging) and then choosing to look away (disengaging). Over time, this teaches them to self-regulate and make better choices.
Understanding your dog’s triggers and thresholds is key to success. If you’re unsure where to start or need help identifying these, don’t hesitate to reach out! We’re here to guide you every step of the way.
For a detailed breakdown of the Engage-Disengage technique, check out the guide below. It’s packed with step-by-step instructions to help you and your dog build confidence and reduce reactivity.
Remember, every dog is unique, and progress takes time. Celebrate the small wins, and don’t hesitate to ask for support when you need it. Together, we can help your dog feel calmer and more confident in the world around them!
