FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
What is positive reinforcement dog training?
Positive reinforcement training is a scientifically proven method: you offer rewards (or “reinforcements”) to the learner to increase the likelihood a behavior will be repeated. In more practical terms, I’ll pay you to do a thing, so you’ll do it again. This approach is kind to both the learner and the teacher.
Why is force-free training the most effective method?
Force free methods strive to teach the learner in a manner that involves no force or fear thus building a stronger trusting bond between learner and teacher. It’s a way to teach a dog to do something with no force or fear. It’s nice, friendly, fun and error free for your pup. That way, they’re happy to try new things. You can see dogs that have been taught through coercion, force, fear, pressure etc. get stuck and refuse to try something new because, in the past, if they did it led to an unpleasant outcome for them.
WHAT TYPE OF TOOLS OR COLLARS DO YOU USE?
Our trainers are committed to force-free techniques. It is our experience that dogs learn skills quickly with positive reinforcement techniques. We successfully utilize science-based training techniques without the use of harsh corrections from shock or pinch collars that can damage the relationship between dog and owner.
WHAT VACCINATIONS DOES MY DOG NEED?
Rabies, DHLLP, and Bordatella every 6 months.
Is positive reinforcement only about using treats?
The “reinforcer” is determined by the dog. Some dogs want toys, snuggles, walks etc. However, most dogs love food, so we capitalize on that to expedite the dogs’ learning.
MY DOG ISN’T FIXED. CAN THEY STILL COME TO SCHOOL?
HOW OLD DOES MY DOG NEED TO BE TO ENROLL?
The health and wellbeing of your puppy is always our first priority. If your puppy is not fully vaccinated, we encourage you to look into our Puppy Socialization Class. This four-week course is designed to help owners navigate the cute but frustrating puppy months with a variety of skills. We fully sanitize the facility before puppies enter their classes. Your dog is fully vaccinated, they’re welcome to enroll in any of our other services.
What age can I start training my puppy?
We start training pups as soon as they’re in their new home. Our puppy class is designed for pups that have not received all of their vaccines. We set up a clean environment to learn about socialization, basic manners and how to solve basic puppy problem behaviors.
WHAT SKILLS WILL MY DOG LEARN?
Our curriculum is designed to follow the American Kennel Clubs’ Family Dog program. Sit, down, come, leave it, leash skills, and stay are the foundation for a well-mannered dog. We guide clients through these skills in a variety of ways that allow them to navigate any environment with their dog.
Does positive reinforcement work for aggressive dogs?
YES, positive reinforcement works for aggressive dogs, scared dogs and a myriad of other behavioral issues!
Is it possible to train an older dog or only puppies?
Dogs of ALL ages can learn! We love watching dogs of all ages become active learners.
How do I stop my dog from pulling on the leash?
Leash pulling is a HUGE issue and one we love working on. The complexity of leash pulling is too big to address in this question BUT we, at the School for Dogs, teach dogs that the feel of a tight leash actually means “come back to me and pay attention” as well as teaching the dog that staying engaged with their handler and walking politely on our sides earns tons of good things.
How do I introduce my reactive dog to new people or dogs?
To introduce your reactive dogs to new dogs you need to understand your dog’s thresholds, body language, triggers and tolerance. If you’re ready to learn how to help your reactive dog, reach out to us. We offer private as well as group learning opportunities to help those reactive pups.
What happens if my dog is too stressed or reactive for group class?
At the School for Dogs, we are advocates for your pup first and foremost. Learning occurs best with a relaxed mind. If your pup is too stressed to learn in a group class or our day-school, we recommend setting up a private lesson where we can come to your home and help you and your pup in a safe, relaxed environment.

How do I correct a dog's bad behavior without punishment?
First, let’s define punishment. In behavioral terms, punishment refers to any consequence that reduces the likelihood of a behavior recurring. Instead of relying on punishment alone, a more effective approach is to train the dog to perform an alternative, desirable behavior that replaces the unwanted one.
What equipment should I bring to a training class?
For training, you’ll just need a regular flat collar or harness along with a 4- foot leash. We do not recommend retractable leashes, prong, or choke collars.
What kind of training certifications should I look for?
When looking for a dog trainer, we recommend you look for someone affiliated and/or certified with the APDT, IAABC, or CCPDT. There are other organizations and schools like the Karen Pryor Academy that our trainers go through as they work towards their CCPDT certification.
